Apps from scratch
Consider creating an original mobile app. Mobile applications may be expensive to develop but they offer some hard-to-match benefits, including a totally immersed brand experience for the customer, new revenue streams and access to new and valuable data. Learn more
Boost profits with planning
Careful inventory planning is key to maximizing profits during the holiday season. Review your sales from September onward to identify your top-selling items — these will likely continue to sell well for the rest of the season. Aim to have enough on hand to satisfy customers, but not so much that you’ll have to slash prices later. Learn more.
Engage in real time on Facebook
Consider hosting a live “chat” on your Facebook business page to build community. Announce a day and time for the chat, and kick it off with a post inviting participants’ questions. Chats can work well for many businesses: Realtors might provide home-buying tips, while clothing boutiques could discuss current fashions. Learn more.
Hold on to holiday customers
Capitalize on holiday traffic by encouraging new customers to sign up for your email or text messaging list. Post signs near your cash register describing the benefits of staying in touch, and consider sending a coupon to entice new subscribers to come back.
Do your business processes support innovation and productivity, or are they getting in the way? Here are five warning signs that a process might be doing more harm than good.
The process inhibits customer service
If you find yourself (or your employees) telling customers, “I can’t help you because …” and the reason is a process that isn’t critical, it’s time to rethink that process. Maybe you need a technology update or overhaul that allows customers to buy online or track their purchases. But if it’s simply a bad case of that’s-not-how-we-do-it, it’s time to rewrite the rules.
The process disempowers employees
If a process demands that every decision requires multiple approvals on multiple tiers, would-be decision makers become stifled and feel as if they aren’t trusted to carry out their jobs. It becomes easier to simply stop making decisions. Innovation suffers, as does morale.
The process creates too many meetings
Staying in the loop is important, and the multiple viewpoints and skill sets that meetings bring together can facilitate solutions to problems. But if you’re meeting just because it’s on the calendar and process demands it, you may be wasting time and limiting individual productivity.
The process demands busywork without next steps
Are you generating reports for the sake of generating reports? Don’t misunderstand, careful study and arrangement of data can reveal volumes about what you’re doing right—or wrong—and help you adapt to better reach customers. But if you’re not acting on the information, it’s time to either start acting or stop reporting.
The process makes you lose your sense of purpose
If processes go unchecked, eventually everything you do can feel like a micro-task, with no sense of the larger goal. Luckily, there are plenty of tools to help you rethink, improve, and streamline your processes. A few of our favorites include Workflowgen, Agiloft, and Canvas.

Tips
Attract customers
Engage customers at the point of interest. From mobile marketing to search engine optimization, finding customers in the digital world requires a comprehensive communication strategy. For example, ExactTarget® Marketing Cloud or the AT&T Messaging Toolkit℠ allows customers to communicate with your business—no matter their mobile devices.
Keep up with online chatter
Knowing what customers are saying about your business is key to protecting its reputation. Use Google Alerts™ to monitor what is said about your company online. Consider using a service such as Review Trackers or ReviewPush to consolidate all your reviews in one place and alert you when new ones appear.
Why it’s ok if some remote workers fail
Distributing teams typically results in productivity increases. This makes sense, since the extra hours gained from a lack of a commute free up time and energy. A recent study though found that the most successful remote work programs also allow for people to opt to work in the office. Learn more.
Talk security with your vendors
A company’s security is only as strong as its vendors’. Ask potential vendors about the measures they use to protect customer information, safeguard technology, and train employees. Include a technology staff member or consultant in the discussion if possible. Learn more.
